Con 2.000 años de historia y 7.000 habitantes,
Montellano conserva un valioso conjunto
monumental que puede admirarse
recorriendo las plácidas calles del casco
antiguo de casas blancas y solariegas donde
los niños juegan y las personas pasean
ajenas al trajín de las grandes ciudades.
Aquí no existen las prisas y el tiempo transcurre
lentamente. Esta atmósfera apacible
invita a caminar y detenerse ante edificios
con encanto y de gran importancia arquitectónica.
Uno de estos atractivos es la Parroquia
de San José, del siglo XVIII, donde destaca
la elegante portada barroca en piedra tallada.
Los materiales utilizados para su construcción
son la piedra caliza y mármol rosa
de la sierra de San Pablo.
La arquitectura del Centro de Salud es
también muy interesante. Este edificio será
convertido en el futuro Centro de las Artes
de la localidad. |
With 2,000 years of history and 7,000 inhabitants, Montellano
has preserved some valuable historical sights that
can be admired as you explore the peaceful streets of the
old quarter which are full of white houses and manorhouses,
where children play and people stroll along, far
removed from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Here
there is no rush —time passes slowly. This pleasant
atmosphere encourages the visitor to explore and take the
time to admire the charming buildings, some of which are
of great architectural importance. One of these is the 18th
century Parroquia de San José (St. Joseph’s Parish
Church), with its outstandingly elegant baroque doorway
made of carved stone. The materials used in its construction
are limestone and pink marble from the Sierra de San
Pablo. The architecture of the Health Centre is also very
interesting. This building is going to be converted into the
village’s future Arts Centre. |

Otro interesante monumento que podemos
visitar es la Residencia de Ancianos.
Se empezó a construir en 1929 según las
trazas realizadas por el arquitecto Vicente
Traver Tomás, el autor del teatro Lope de
Vega y el Banco Central de Sevilla. El asilo
está rodeado de espléndidos jardines y
posee una capilla con hermosas vidrieras
policromadas.
De gran singularidad es el castillo de Cotte de estilo alfonsí. Construido a finales del
siglo XIII, posee una torre que tiene doble
función de capilla-sala capitular y fortaleza,
siendo este tipo de torre única en España.
No podemos olvidar la importante artesanía
de Montellano donde fabrica guitarras
un famoso lutier y los artesanos trabajan la
cuerda de pita, la ebanistería, la cerámica y
la palma.
Y no debemos abandonar este destino
serrano sin probar su rica gastronomía elaborada
con el excelente y famoso aceite de
oliva del municipio. Degusta su guiso de
espárragos y tagarninas o la alboronía,
entre otras delicias guisadas a partir de productos
de esta tierra peculiar que conmemorará
en 2010 la invasión de la villa por tropas
napoleónicas. Desde 2005, el ayuntamiento
programa actividades para rememorar estos
hechos que sucedieron entre el 14 y el 22
de abril de 1810 y que unió para siempre a
esta localidad y al municipio de Algodonales
que ayudó a los montellenenses en aquellos
trágicos sucesos. Estos lazos de amistad se
estrecharon desde entonces y se perpetúan
a través de este proyecto cultural. |
Another interesting monument to visit is the Old People’s
Home. It was built in 1929, according to the plans of the
architect Vicente Traver Tomás, who designed the Lope de
Vega Theatre and the Central Bank of Seville. The home is
surrounded by splendid gardens and has a chapel with
beautiful stained glass windows.
The Cotte Castle, built in Alfonsi style, is really exceptional.
Built at the end of the 13th century, it has a tower that
serves the double function of chapel or prayer room and
fortress —a type of tower that is unique in Spain.
We should not forget the importance of craftsmanship in
Montellano —a famous luthier makes guitars here, and
craftsmen work in cabinet-making, ceramics, and weaving
palm leaves and agave fibres.
And we must not leave this mountain destination without
trying its gastronomic delights, prepared with the excellent
and famous local olive oil. Try the asparagus and the golden
thistle (a variety of nettle), or the alboronía, among other
treats made with the produce of this unique land, which
in 2010 marks the invasion by Napoleon’s troops. Since
2005, the town hall has organised a programme of activities
to remember the tragic events that took place between
the 14th and 22nd of April 1810. In Montellano’s hour of
need the town of Algodonales came to its aid, thus uniting
the two communities from that day forth. Since then these
bonds of friendship have become ever tighter, and they
continue to do so through this cultural project.

Tanto para los viajeros de espíritu tranquilo
como para los de corazón aventurero, la
sierra de San Pablo los aguarda para mostrarles
rincones, actividades y parajes insospechados.
Senderismo, cicloturismo, acampada
libre, ala delta, escalada, parapente…
Naturaleza viva en la que conviven cortijos,
extensos campos de cultivo y montes que
nos regalan hermosas panorámicas desde
sus cumbres. De gran interés son el Mirador
de La Cruz o el de la Cancha; a éste
llegamos tras recorrer rocas y crestas rodeadas
de matorral para finalmente maravillarnos
ante un paisaje dominado por el magnífico
castillo de Cotte. El entorno de Montellano
continúa sorprendiéndonos: de gran
espectacularidad es el Monumento Natural
de Andalucía Los Tajos de Mogarejo,
cuyos extraordinarios escarpes emocionan
a quienes adoran el aire puro. Y si el calor
aprieta, acudan al Chaparro de la Corregidora.
Tras 500 años continúa dando sombra
bajo sus casi 4 metros de perímetro en su
tronco y su copa de 28 metros de diámetro
a todo aquel que busque un momento de
placidez. |

For both the meditative and the adventurously-minded traveller, the Sierra de San Pablo is waiting to show them unexpected
nooks, activities and places to go. Hikes, cycling routes, open camping areas, hang-gliding, rock-climbing, paragliding… a natural
landscape in which we can find farmhouses, extensive cultivated fields and mountains with beautiful panoramic views from
their summits.
Of great interest are the viewing points Mirador de La Cruz and La Cancha; we arrive at the latter after trekking through rocks
and crests surrounded by heathland, to marvel at last at a landscape dominated by the magnificent Cotte Castle, which dates back
to the 13th century - the architecture of which is unique in the Iberian Peninsular. The area surrounding Montellano continues to
surprise us; one really spectacular part is Los Tajos de Mogarejo, a Natural Monument of Andalusia —its extraordinary steep
slopes thrill those who love breathing pure air. And if the heat gets too much, head for El Chaparro (literally “squat, chubby man”!)
de la Corregidora— an ancient tree with a trunk circumference measuring nearly four metres, and foliage with a diameter of 28
metres —which has been offering its shade for over 500 years to all those who seek a moment of calm. |

Otra forma fascinante de disfrutar de la
naturaleza de Montellano es recorrer sus
parajes a caballo, lejos del negro asfalto. La
tradición ecuestre está muy presente en la
historia y cultura de este municipio. La Peña
Hípica realiza actividades durante todo el
año pero los momentos más espectaculares
para rendirnos ante la belleza y nobleza de
estos ejemplares andaluces son durante la
Romería de San Isidro Labrador y de la
Feria Agroturística y Ganadera. Este
evento ha cumplido en mayo su IX edición y
ha contado con más de un centenar de
comerciantes y ganaderos como expositores
además de celebrar como novedad la
primera edición de la Feria Nacional del
Perro. |

Another fascinating way to enjoy the natural surroundings of
Montellano is to explore it on horseback, far from the asphalt
road. The equestrian tradition is ever-present in the history
and culture of this town. La Peña Hípica (Horseriding Club)
organises activities throughout the year, but the most spectacular
times to give oneself up to the beauty and nobility of these
Andalusian creatures are during the Romería de San Isidro
Labrador and the Cattle and Agritourism Fair. This latter
event celebrated its ninth anniversary in May —over a hundred
traders and cattle dealers exhibited there, and the first-ever
National Dog Fair also took place. |

FIESTAS DE INTERÉS
SEMANA SANTA. Del 1 al 8 de Abril . Dos hermandades
hacen la estación de penitencia: el Miércoles Santo
la hermandad de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Gran Poder,
y el Viernes Santo la hermandad del Santísimo Cristo
de los Remedios. Desde el año 2000 la Pro-hermandad
de la Borriquita también posesiona el Domingo de
Ramos.
IX EDICIÓN FERIA AGROTURÍSTICA Y GANADERA.
Del 4 al 6 de Mayo. La feria de muestras de Montellano
se presenta como una de las más visitadas de la provincia,
con un importante volumen de negocio para ganaderos
y comerciantes.
ROMERÍA DE SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR.
Del 18 al 20
de Mayo. Declarada fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional,
se celebra el primer Domingo posterior al 15 de Mayo,
festividad del Santo Patrón. Sin duda se trata de la fiesta
más conocida y popular de Montellano, caracterizada
por la alegría y hospitalidad de sus gentes, quienes
el Domingo acuden a la Sierra de San Pablo, detrás de
las carretas, para pasar un día de convivencia.
XXVIII FESTIVAL FLAMENCO DE ARTISTAS NO CONSAGRADOS.
28 de Julio. Organizado por la Peña Flamenca
“El Madroñero”, está considerado como uno de
los festivales más importantes y destacados de cuantos
se celebran en la provincia, con la particularidad de descubrir
a grandes figuras del cante, el toque y el baile.
LOS JUBILEOS.
Del 2 al 5 de Agosto ) Feria de Monte
llano que se celebra en honor a Nuestra Señora de
los Ángeles, durante cuatro días y que tiene lugar en las
fechas cercanas al 2 de Agosto, día de la patronal.

FESTIVALS OF INTEREST
SEMANA SANTA (Holy Week) – 1-8 April. Two hermandades
(religious brotherhoods) do penance: on Miércoles Santo (the
Wednesday of Holy Week) the Hermandad of Nuestro Padre
Jesús del Gran Poder, and on Viernes Santo (Good Friday) the
Hermandad of Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios. Since the
year 2000, the Pro-Hermandad de la Borriquita has also taken
part in the procession on Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday).
9TH CATTLE AND AGRITOURISM FAIR – 4-6 May. This Montellano
fair is one of the best-attended in the province and provides
good business for cattle dealers and traders, as well as
being an interesting visit for tourists.
ROMERÍA DE SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR – 18-20 May. Declared
a festival of national touristic interest, it is celebrated on the
first Sunday after the 15th of May, the day of the patron saint,
Saint Isidore. It is without doubt the most well-known and
popular festival in Montellano, characterised by the merriment
and hospitality of its people, who on the Sunday travel by carreta
(a gypsy-style wagon) to the Sierra de San Pablo, to
spend a convivial day together. A romería is a type of pilgrimage,
usually to a chapel dedicated to one of the many representations
of the Virgin Mary, and the festivities which take
place on arrival.
28TH FESTIVAL OF NEW FLAMENCO ARTISTS – 28 July.
Organised by the Peña Flamenca (flamenco club) ‘El
Madroñero’, this festival is considered one of the most important
of those celebrated in the province. It is particularly
renowned for discovering new flamenco singers, musicians
and dancers.
LOS JUBILEOS – 2-5 August. A Montellano festival which is
celebrated in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our
Lady of the Angels). It lasts four days and takes place around
the 2nd of August, the day of the patron saint. |
